Using the handbrake on a vehicle with an automatic transmission:
1. Stop the car and put it in Park mode (P). This will lock the transmission, preventing the vehicle from moving.
2. Tighten the handbrake. To do this, pull the handbrake lever up until you feel a clear click.
3. Release the brake pedal. The handbrake now keeps the car from moving.
4. When moving again:
— Make sure the handbrake is released.
— Start the engine and select a gear (D for forward or R for reverse).
— Gradually release the brake pedal while pressing the accelerator pedal.
Note:
* Always use the handbrake when parking, especially on slopes.
* Do not over-tighten the handbrake as this may damage the brake pads.
* Do not leave the car on the handbrake for a long time, as this may cause rust and jamming.
* If the handbrake does not hold the car, have the brake system checked and repaired by a mechanic.
