Materials and equipment:
*Fresh automatic transmission oil (check your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations)
* New automatic transmission filter (if applicable)
* New transmission pan gasket
*Socket wrench or ratchet wrench
* Oil drain pan
* Funnel
* Hose or oil gun (optional)
Instructions:
1. Raise the vehicle and place it on safety stands
* Place the car on a level surface.
* Apply the parking brake.
* Raise the front of the car using a jack.
* Install safety supports under the front frame of the vehicle.
2. Cool the transmission
* Let the vehicle sit for 15-20 minutes to allow the transmission to cool.
3. Find the drain plug
*Locate the drain plug at the bottom of the transmission pan.
* Place a pan under the drain plug to drain the oil.
4. Drain the oil
* Carefully unscrew the drain plug using a wrench or ratchet.
* Wait until all the oil has drained into the pan.
5. Remove the transmission pan
* Remove the bolts or screws that secure the transmission pan.
* Carefully remove the pan and allow the remaining oil to drain.
6. Replace filter (if applicable)
*If your transmission has a filter, find it and replace it with a new one.
7. Clean the pan and gasket
* Clean the transmission pan and new gasket of old oil and debris.
8. Install a new gasket
* Place a new gasket on the transmission pan.
9. Install the transmission pan
* Carefully reinstall the transmission pan.
* Tighten the bolts or screws by hand and then use a wrench to tighten them to the recommended torque.
10. Tighten the drain plug
* Install the drain plug with a new washer (if applicable) and tighten it to the recommended torque.
11. Add new oil
*Using a funnel or oil gun, add fresh automatic transmission oil to the dipstick hole.
* Check the oil level on the dipstick and add if necessary.
12. Reset the maintenance counter
*If your vehicle is equipped with a transmission fluid maintenance meter, reset it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
13. Check the fluid level and make sure there are no leaks
* Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
* Check the fluid level using the dipstick when the engine is hot.
* Inspect the transmission pan for leaks.
14. Remove the vehicle from the supports
* Slowly lower the vehicle from the safety stands.
