Types of automatic transmissions
There are several types of automatic transmissions (AT):
* Box with torque converter
* Box with variator (CVT)
* Robotic gearbox (manual transmission)
* Double clutch gearbox (DSG)
Switching speeds
Gear shifting in an automatic transmission is carried out without driver intervention. However, some automatic transmissions have the ability to manually change gears. This can be useful in some situations, such as when overtaking or descending a mountain.
Automatic transmission mode selector
On most cars, the automatic transmission mode selector is located on the center console. Typically it has the following provisions:
*P (Park): Holds the vehicle in place in a parked position.
* R (Reverse): Engages reverse gear.
* N (Neutral): The transmission is not engaged.
* D (Drive): Automatic gear shift mode for normal driving.
* S (Sport): Higher rpm shift mode for a sportier ride.
* L (Low): A low-speed shift mode for use in situations that require extra traction (such as hill climbing or towing).
Manual gear shift
Some automatic transmissions have a manual gear shift mode. It is usually activated by moving the selector to the “+/-” position. You can then change gears using the gear lever or steering wheel paddle shifters (if equipped).
When driving in a straight line
In most situations, when driving in a straight line, you should use D (Drive) mode. The automatic transmission will automatically change gears depending on the vehicle speed and engine load.
When overtaking or going uphill
If you need to speed up when overtaking or going uphill, you can switch to S (Sport) or L (Low) mode. This will allow the transmission to hold a lower gear, providing better traction.
When going down the mountain
When descending a mountain, it is recommended to switch to L (Low gear) mode. This will help the engine hold the vehicle using the braking effect of the engine.
General recommendations
*Always use Parking Mode (P) when leaving your vehicle unattended.
* Shift to Neutral (N) only in an emergency stop.
* Do not change gears manually unless necessary.
* Perform regular automatic transmission maintenance as recommended by the manufacturer.
