Changing the oil in a Volkswagen Golf 4 automatic transmission
Required tools and materials:
* New transmission oil for automatic transmission (about 4 liters)
* Drain plug and O-ring
* Automatic transmission pan gasket
* Funnel
* Wrench set
* Flat head screwdriver
* Rags
Replacement procedure:
1. Safety first. Set the vehicle’s parking brake and wait until the engine cools down.
2. Raise the car. Raise the front of the car with a jack and lower it onto jack stands. Ensure vehicle stability.
3. Locate the drain plug. The drain plug is located at the bottom of the automatic transmission pan.
4. Drain the old oil. Place a container under the drain plug and use a wrench to unscrew it. Allow the oil to drain completely into the container.
5. Replace the drain plug. Clean the drain plug thoroughly and replace the O-ring. Replace the drain plug and tighten it with a wrench.
6. Remove the automatic transmission pan. Unscrew the bolts securing the pan to the automatic transmission housing. Carefully separate the pan from the body so as not to damage the gasket.
7. Clean the pan and filter. Remove old transmission oil and dirt from the pan and filter. Replace the filter if necessary.
8. Install a new pan gasket. Clean the surfaces of the pan and automatic transmission housing. Apply a new gasket to the pan.
9. Reinstall the tray. Lightly tighten the bolts securing the pan to the automatic transmission housing. Use a torque wrench for final tightening to the recommended torque.
10. Fill with new oil. Using a funnel, pour new transmission oil into the automatic transmission through the dipstick hole. Pour in about 3.5 liters of oil.
11. Start the engine. Start the engine and warm it up to operating temperature. Shift through all gears to circulate oil through the system.
12. Check the oil level. After the engine has warmed up, stop it and wait 2-3 minutes. Remove the oil level dipstick and check the level. The oil should be between the “min” and “max” marks on the dipstick.
13. Add oil if necessary. If the oil level is below the “min” mark, add a little oil and check the level again.
14. Lower the vehicle. Remove the supports and lower the vehicle to the ground. Make sure all bolts are properly tightened.
15. Take it for a test drive. Drive the car in different driving modes to check the operation of the automatic transmission and make sure there are no leaks.
Adviсe:
* Use only gear oil recommended by the manufacturer.
* Check the transmission oil level regularly and change it every 60,000-80,000 km or as recommended by the manufacturer.
* If you notice an oil leak or strange noises from the automatic transmission, contact your mechanic immediately.
