Gear shift modes in automatic transmissions

Please note: Mode names may vary depending on vehicle manufacturer and model.

P (Parking)

* Blocks the transmission when parking. The car cannot move.

R (Reverse)

* Shifts the transmission into reverse.

N (Neutral)

* Disconnects the transmission from the engine. The car can roll freely.

D (Drive)

* Basic driving mode. Automatically changes gears depending on speed and load.

* Simulates second gear in manual mode. Used for climbing hills or slowing down.

* Simulates first gear in manual mode. Used to overcome steep climbs or descend hills.

S (Sport)

* Shifts to lower gears for sharper acceleration.

M (Manual)

* Allows the driver to manually change gears using the steering wheel paddles or the gear selector.

L (Low)

*Keeps gear in low gear for maximum torque. Used to overcome difficult conditions such as snow, mud or steep climbs.

W (Winter)

* Starts driving in second gear to reduce slipping on slippery roads.

Eco

* Optimizes gear shifting to save fuel.

Tiptronic

* Allows the driver to change gears manually using the gear selector, but without using the clutch.

Adaptive Drive

* Adapts gear shift points to the driver’s driving style.
