Automatic transmission fluid temperature sensor
Purpose:
The automatic transmission fluid temperature sensor (transmission fluid) measures the temperature of the fluid in the transmission and transmits data to the electronic control unit (ECU).
Working principle:
The automatic transmission temperature sensor is usually a thermistor that changes its electrical resistance depending on the temperature of the fluid. The higher the temperature, the lower the resistance of the thermistor.
The change in resistance is detected by the ECU, which uses this information to:
* Automatic transmission control (for example, gear shifting, torque converter locking)
* Display fluid temperature on the dashboard
* Starting a warning light when the liquid overheats
Location:
The automatic transmission temperature sensor is usually located in the transmission pan or housing, where it is in contact with the working fluid.
Symptoms of malfunction:
A faulty automatic transmission temperature sensor can lead to the following symptoms:
* Incorrect gear shifting
* Gear slip
* Transmission fluid overheating
* The liquid overheating warning light is on
* Incorrect temperature readings on the dashboard
Diagnostics and replacement:
Diagnosis of a faulty automatic transmission temperature sensor includes measuring the resistance of the thermistor and comparing it with the nominal value.
Replacing the automatic transmission temperature sensor is usually a simple task and can be done at home. It is necessary to drain the working fluid, disconnect and remove the old sensor and install a new one. Then the liquid is poured back.
Important:
*Using a quality fluid and the recommended fluid change interval is critical to the life of the automatic transmission temperature sensor and the entire transmission.
* Never operate a vehicle with overheated transmission fluid, as this can cause serious damage to the automatic transmission.
