Replacing a differential in an automatic transmission
The differential is an important component of an automatic transmission (AT), which distributes torque between the drive wheels. If the differential fails, it can cause problems with handling and transmission performance. Here is a guide to replacing the differential in an automatic transmission:
Tools and materials:
* Set of wrenches and sockets
* Transmission fluid
* New differential
*Differential gasket
*Transmission filter
* Oil pan
* Sealant for gaskets
Steps:
1. Preparation:
* Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
* Raise the car on a lift or with a jack.
* Drain the transmission fluid by unscrewing the oil pan drain plug.
2. Removing the automatic transmission:
* Disconnect the drive shafts from the transmission.
* Disconnect electrical connectors and cooling lines.
* Place a transmission jack under the transmission and support it.
* Remove the bolts holding the gearbox to the engine and carefully remove it.
3. Disassembling the automatic transmission:
* Place the transmission on a workbench and remove the bolts securing the oil pan.
* Remove the pan and replace the transmission filter.
* Inspect the friction discs and steel discs for wear or damage.
4. Replacing the differential:
* Remove the old differential from the transmission housing.
* Install a new differential gasket and place the new differential in the housing.
* Secure the differential with bolts.
5. Automatic transmission assembly:
* Install the oil pan and tighten the bolts.
* Fill with fresh transmission fluid.
* Connect electrical connectors and cooling lines.
6. Automatic transmission installation:
* Carefully reinstall the gearbox.
* Fasten the bolts securing it to the engine.
* Connect the drive shafts.
7. Completion:
* Lower the car and connect the negative terminal of the battery.
* Start the engine and check the transmission fluid level.
*Add liquid if necessary.
Adviсe:
* Use a new differential recommended by the manufacturer.
* Replace gaskets and seals during assembly.
* Handle the automatic transmission with care as it is a fragile component.
