Transmission control unit
The Transmission Control Unit (TCU), also known as the Transmission Control Module (TCM), is an electronic device that controls the operation of the automatic transmission in AUDI vehicles.
Functions of the gearbox control unit:
* Read data from various sensors, including speed, gear position and throttle position sensors.
* Selection of optimal gear ratios based on sensor data and specified parameters.
* Electro-hydraulic block (EHB) control for engaging and disengaging clutches and brake bands.
* Monitoring and diagnosing the transmission system and issuing fault codes.
* Adaptation to driving style and traffic conditions.
Location of the gearbox control unit:
In AUDI cars, the gearbox control unit is usually located in the engine compartment, either next to the gearbox or under the power steering fluid reservoir.
Types of AUDI transmission control units:
*01M – for 5HP19 and 5HP24 gearboxes used in vehicles from the late 1990s to the mid-2000s.
*01N – for 4HP20 and 5HP19FL gearboxes used in vehicles from the late 1990s to early 2000s.
* 09L – for 6HP19, 6HP26 and 6HP28 gearboxes used in vehicles from the 2000s to the 2010s.
* 0B5 – for 8HP45, 8HP55 and 8HP70 gearboxes used in vehicles from 2010s to present.
Replacement or repair of the transmission control unit:
If the transmission control unit malfunctions, it may require replacement or repair. Replacement is usually more expensive, and repair may be possible depending on the nature of the problem. Diagnosis and repair of the transmission control unit should be left to a qualified automotive technician.
