Automatic transmission accumulator spring function

The hydraulic accumulator spring of the automatic transmission torque converter performs the following functions:

* Shift Damping: The spring helps smooth out and improve the smoothness of gear shifts by absorbing and releasing energy generated by changes in oil pressure.
* Oil Pressure Stabilization: The spring helps maintain constant oil pressure in the torque converter, smoothing out pressure peaks and dips during gear changes.
* Overheat Protection: The spring helps dissipate heat from the torque converter friction elements, preventing overheating and premature wear.
* Thermal Expansion Compensation: The spring allows the oil and other torque converter components to expand as temperatures rise without creating excessive pressure.

The accumulator spring is usually made of durable steel with a high yield strength. It has a cylindrical or conical shape and is located inside the accumulator housing.

The accumulator spring is located inside the automatic transmission torque converter housing. It is placed between the movable blades of the torque converter and the housing wall.

Accumulator spring malfunctions

Malfunctions of the accumulator spring can lead to the following problems:

*Hard Shifts: If the spring is damaged or weakened, it cannot effectively dampen shifts, resulting in a jerky or lagging feeling.
* Grinding or Noise: A damaged or weakened spring can create a grinding or noise during gear shifts due to friction between the movable torque converter vanes and the housing.
*Overheating: A faulty spring can cause the torque converter to overheat because it cannot dissipate heat effectively.
