In general, towing a car with an automatic transmission (automatic transmission) is not recommended, since the crankshaft rotates only while the car is moving. To preserve the automatic transmission when towing, the following rules must be observed:
* For front-wheel drive vehicles without the ability to disengage the drive axle: towing is only possible for a short distance (no more than 50 km) at a speed of no more than 50 km/h. The automatic transmission selector must be in the neutral position (N).
* For rear-wheel drive vehicles: towing is possible for an unlimited distance at a speed of up to 70 km/h. The automatic transmission selector must be in the “Parking” (P) or “Neutral” (N) position.
* For four-wheel drive vehicles: towing is only permitted with the transfer case disengaged or the driveshaft removed.
It is important to remember that:
* Long-term towing of a car with an automatic transmission can lead to serious damage to the transmission.
* Towing an automatic transmission vehicle jerkily or too quickly can damage the transmission.
* It is necessary to avoid towing a car with automatic transmission in difficult road conditions (snow, ice, steep slopes).
If possible, it is better to use a special tow truck for towing.
