Audi automatic transmission torque converter clutch

The torque converter clutch is an important component of the Audi automatic transmission. It transmits torque from the engine to the gearbox, allowing the car to shift gears smoothly.

Design and principle of operation

The torque converter clutch consists of several elements:

* Pump: Driven by the engine, it creates hydraulic pressure that directs hydraulic fluid (ATF) to the torque converter.
* Turbine: Connected to the gearbox and rotated by working fluid from the pump.
* Stator: The stationary component that directs the working fluid back to the pump.
*Lockup Clutch: A clutch that can connect the pump and turbine to improve efficiency.

When the engine is running, the pump creates hydraulic pressure, which forces the working fluid to rotate the turbine. The turbine then transmits the torque to the gearbox. As the vehicle’s speed increases, the stator forces fluid back to the pump, increasing the pressure and torque transmitted to the transmission.

Locking clutch

The lock-up clutch is used to improve the efficiency of the automatic transmission at high speeds. It connects the pump and turbine, eliminating slippage and reducing power loss. This reduces fuel consumption and improves the vehicle’s dynamic performance.

Malfunctions

A faulty torque converter clutch can cause the following problems:

*Slippage when shifting gears
* Gear shift delays
* Noise and vibration when shifting gears
* Automatic transmission overheating
* Increased fuel consumption

Maintenance and replacement

The torque converter clutch usually requires no maintenance. However, if problems arise with the torque transmission, it may need to be replaced or repaired. The torque converter clutch should be replaced by a qualified mechanic.
