Audi automatic transmission selector position sensor

Target:

Determine the position of the automatic transmission gear selector and transmit information to the electronic transmission control unit (TCM).

Location:

Typically the sensor is located on or near the gear selector mechanism.

Design:

* May be mechanical, electrical or electronic.
*Mechanical sensors use levers or gears to mechanically sense the position of the selector lever.
* Electrical and electronic sensors use position sensors or switches to convert mechanical positions into electrical signals.

Signals:

The sensor produces different electrical signals corresponding to the different selector lever positions:

*Parking (P)
* Neutral (N)
* Drive (D)
* Reverse (R)
* Other modes (depending on the car model)

Functions:

* Provides information about the position of the TCM selector lever.
* Prevents engine starting if the selector lever is not in position P or N.
* Controls gear shifting in automatic transmission.
* Disables cruise control when switching the selector from D or R modes.

Malfunctions:

Possible malfunctions of the automatic transmission selector position sensor include:

* Incorrect signals leading to incorrect gear shifting or engine starting problems.
* An open circuit resulting in a constant display of a certain selector position.
* Inaccurate readings leading to problems with vehicle handling.

Repair:

A faulty automatic transmission selector position sensor usually requires replacement. Repairs can be performed by a qualified mechanic.
