Gear selector position sensor, automatic transmission Kia Rio 3

Location:

*Located on the top of the transmission, near the gear selector.

Function:

* Informs the electronic control unit (ECU) of the automatic transmission about the position of the gear selector.
* This information is used to enable the correct transmission mode.

Signs of malfunction:

* Difficulty shifting gears
*Check Engine light comes on
* Errors related to transmission in the OBD-II diagnostic scanner
* Inability to start the engine

Diagnostics:

*Connect an OBD-II diagnostic scanner to read trouble codes.
* Check the sensor terminals and wiring for damage or corrosion.
* Use a multimeter to check the resistance of the sensor signal wire.

Replacement:

* Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
* Remove the center console compartment.
* Unscrew the sensor mounting bolts.
* Disconnect the sensor connector.
* Install the new sensor in reverse order.

Note:

* When replacing a sensor, the ECU may need to be reprogrammed to recognize the new sensor.
* It is recommended that you have the sensor checked and replaced by a qualified auto mechanic.
