Adjusting the automatic transmission cable of Toyota Corolla

Required tools:

* Open-end wrench 10 or 12 mm
* Ruler or tape measure
* Flat blade screwdriver

Adjustment procedure:

1. Determination of the starting position:

* Start the engine and warm it up to operating temperature.
* Shift the transmission to Park.

2. Checking the lever stroke:

* Move the gear shift lever from Park to Drive.
* Measure the distance from the top of the lever to the base of the handle.

3. Loosen the locknut:

* Locate the shift cable locknut. It is usually located in the engine compartment next to the gear shift lever.
* Loosen the locknut with an open-end wrench.

4. Plunger adjustment:

* Locate the shift cable plunger. This is a small metal piece located at the end of the cable.
* Rotate the plunger with a flat blade screwdriver to adjust its position.

5. Stroke setting:

* Shift the gear lever between Park and Drive several times to ensure that the lever travel is approximately 20mm.
*If necessary, repeat steps 3 through 5 to adjust the plunger appropriately.

6. Tightening the lock nut:

* Tighten the lock nut to lock the plunger in the selected position.

7. Check:

* Check the gear lever travel to make sure it is smooth and within the required specifications.
* If necessary, repeat the adjustment procedure.

*If you are not confident in your ability to adjust the automatic transmission cable, seek professional help.
* Incorrect adjustment may cause shifting problems and damage to the transmission.
