Adjustment procedure:
1. Find the automatic transmission shift cable:
It connects the gear selector lever to the transmission and is a flexible metal cable with a plastic sheath.
2. Loosen the fixing nut on the cable bracket:
Typically this nut is located at the end of the cable where it attaches to the bracket on the transmission.
3. Disconnect the cable from the selector lever:
Loosen the retaining clip or bolt on the selector lever and remove the cable.
4. Loosen the adjusting nut on the cable:
This nut is located near the cable attachment point to the selector lever. Loosen it so that the cable can be adjusted.
5. Move the selector lever to Park (P):
This will ensure the transmission is in the correct position for adjustment.
6. Adjust the cable length:
* Retract the cable if the shift occurs too late.
* Pull out the cable if shifting occurs too early.
When shifting occurs correctly, the selector lever should move to each position with ease, without binding or skipping.
7. Tighten the adjusting nut:
Tighten the adjusting nut to secure the desired cable length.
8. Connect the cable to the selector lever:
Reinstall the cable and tighten the retaining clip or bolt.
9. Tighten the fixing nut on the cable bracket:
Tighten the locking nut to secure the cable in the desired position.
10. Check operation:
Move the selector lever to all positions to ensure that shifting occurs smoothly and correctly.
Notes:
*Before making adjustments, make sure the cable is not damaged.
*If after adjustment you still do not shift correctly, you may need to have the transmission checked and repaired by a qualified mechanic.
*Transmission shift cable adjustment may vary depending on vehicle make and model, so always refer to your owner’s manual for more information.
