Tools and materials:

* Wrench set
* Torque wrench
* Special wrench for adjusting brake bands
* Cleaning product and a pack of dampened wipes

Adjustment procedure:

1. Raise and secure the vehicle:

* Set and tighten the parking brake.
* Raise and secure the vehicle on secure supports.

2. Remove the automatic transmission pan:

* Loosen the automatic transmission pan bolts with a wrench.
* Carefully remove the tray.
* Drain the remaining transmission fluid.

3. Clean surfaces:

* Using a cleaner and dampened wipes, clean the surface of the pan, the contact areas of the brake bands and the pistons.

4. Adjust brake bands:

* Inspect the brake bands for signs of wear or damage.
* Make sure the pistons move freely in the cylinders.
*Using the special brake band adjustment wrench, adjust the bands to the following specifications:

* Rear Brake Band: 0.010-0.038 inch
*Brake pressure control band: 0.003-0.023 inch
*Brake band between shafts: 0.050-0.150 inch

5. Secure the automatic transmission pan:

* Apply gasket sealant to the surface of the pan.
* Install the pan and tighten the bolts with a torque wrench to 10 lb-ft.

6. Fill the automatic transmission with transmission fluid:

* Add the required amount of transmission fluid to the automatic transmission through the dipstick.
* Start the engine and warm it up to operating temperature.
* Check the transmission fluid level and add if necessary.

7. Start and check the automatic transmission:

* Lower the vehicle and start the engine.
*Check that the gears shift correctly and that there are no unusual noises.

Note:

*This adjustment procedure is suitable for 44RE automatic transmissions installed on Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles.
*Always consult your specific vehicle’s service manual to verify exact adjustment specifications.
