Purpose of automatic transmission cooling radiator

The automatic transmission (automatic transmission) cooling radiator is designed to remove excess heat from the transmission fluid (ATF) to prevent it from overheating. Overheating of the ATF can damage automatic transmission components and reduce its performance.

Location of automatic transmission cooling radiator on Volvo XC60

On the Volvo XC60, the automatic transmission cooling radiator is located next to the main engine radiator at the front of the car. It is installed on the driver’s side and is connected to the automatic transmission by two pipes for ATF circulation.

Automatic transmission cooling radiator design

The automatic transmission cooling radiator consists of the following main components:

* Radiator Core: Consists of thin tubes through which ATF circulates.
* Reservoirs: Located on the sides of the radiator and provide connection to the automatic transmission pipes.
*Plates: Thin metal plates placed between the tubes that increase the cooling area.

Signs of a faulty automatic transmission cooling radiator

The following signs may indicate a faulty automatic transmission radiator:

* ATF overheating: Check the automatic transmission temperature indicator or a diagnostic scanner.
* Reduced automatic transmission efficiency: The transmission may slip, loosen or overheat.
* ATF Leaks: Check under the vehicle for fluid leaks.
* Contaminated ATF: ATF may be dark or contain metal particles.

Replacement of automatic transmission cooling radiator

Replacing an automatic transmission cooling radiator requires special knowledge and equipment. It is recommended that you contact an authorized service to perform this task.
