Toyota automatic transmission operating modes

P (Parking)

* Locks the transmission output shaft, preventing the vehicle from moving.
* Used when the vehicle is at rest or parked for a long time.

R (Reverse)

* Shifts the gearbox into reverse.
* Used to move the vehicle in the opposite direction.

N (Neutral)

* Disconnects the engine from the transmission, allowing the vehicle to move freely.
*Used when towing a vehicle or when the engine must run without the vehicle moving.

D (Drive)

* The most common mode for normal driving.
* Automatically shifts gears as needed for optimal performance and fuel economy.

S (Sport)

*High performance mode which changes gear shift points to higher rpm.
* Provides faster acceleration and better handling on winding roads.

L (Low gear)

*Used for climbing steep inclines or when driving in low speed conditions.
* Locks low gear ratio for added power and control.

B (Engine braking)

* Engine braking mode, which provides additional braking force when driving downhill.
* Reduces stress on the brakes and helps maintain a stable speed.

Overdrive

*Additional mode available on some models.
* Unlocks the torque converter at high speeds for improved fuel economy.
