Toyota automatic transmission diagram
Torque converter
* Provides smooth gear shifting and transmits torque from the engine.
Pump
* Creates hydraulic pressure to operate the transmission.
Oil pan
* Contains a supply of transmission fluid.
Hydraulic unit
* Directs hydraulic fluid through the transmission to control gear shifting.
Planetary gearbox
* A device with gears that provides different combinations of gear ratios.
Clutches
* Clutch mechanisms that engage the various gears of the planetary gearbox.
Brake bands
* Delay or stop the rotation of planetary gears.
Gear switch (selector)
* Allows the driver to select transmission modes (eg D, N, R).
Speed sensor
* Monitors vehicle speed and transmits information to the transmission control unit.
Transmission control unit (TCU)
* An electronic unit that controls the operation of the transmission based on input data from sensors and control parameters.
Transmission fluid
* Lubricates and cools transmission components and transfers hydraulic pressure.
Additional components (may not be available on all models)
* Torque Converter Lockup: Allows the torque converter to operate directly, which improves efficiency at high speeds.
* Extra gears: Extra gear ratios to improve fuel economy or performance.
*Manual Mode: Allows the driver to change gears manually using the steering wheel or gear lever switches.
