Instructions for replacing the heat exchanger of a BMW E60 automatic transmission:

1. Security

* Stop the engine and wait until it cools down.
* Set the car to the parking brake.
* Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.

2. Draining transmission fluid

* Place a tray under the automatic transmission crankcase.
* Unscrew the drain plug with a wrench to drain the automatic transmission oil.
* Drain all liquid into the pan.

3. Removing the automatic transmission heat exchanger

* Open the hood and locate the automatic transmission heat exchanger located next to the radiator.
* Disconnect the automatic transmission cooler lines from the heat exchanger using a 13mm wrench.
* Unscrew the two bolts securing the heat exchanger to the cylinder block with an 11 mm socket.
* Remove the heat exchanger from the engine.
* Clean the surface of the seat from old gasket and sealant.

4. Installation of a new heat exchanger

* Apply a thin layer of sealant to the heat exchanger gaskets.
* Install the new heat exchanger on the engine and tighten the mounting bolts with an 11 mm socket.
* Connect the automatic transmission cooler lines to the heat exchanger and tighten them with a 13 mm wrench.

5. Filling transmission fluid

* Fill the transmission with fresh fluid through the filler plug using a funnel.
* Pour in approximately 6 liters of liquid and wait a few minutes for it to drain.
* Check the fluid level using the automatic transmission oil dipstick. Add more if necessary.

6. Starting the engine and checking

* Connect the negative terminal of the battery.
* Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes.
* Check the automatic transmission fluid level again and add if necessary.

7. Reset automatic transmission adaptations

* Perform diagnostics using an error scanner and reset the automatic transmission adaptations.
* This will ensure proper operation of the automatic transmission with the new heat exchanger.

Notes:

*Use only high quality transmission fluid recommended by the manufacturer.
* Be careful not to overtighten the bolts and nuts.
*If you have difficulty or are unsure of your skills, consult a professional mechanic.
