Peugeot 206 automatic transmission shift cable

Replacing an automatic transmission shift cable on a Peugeot 206

Tools and materials:

* New automatic transmission shift cable
* 13mm wrench
* 17mm wrench
* Mounting lever (optional)
*WD-40 or other penetrating lubricant

Instructions:

1. Secure the car.

* Stop the engine.
* Set the car to the parking brake.
* Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.

2. Disconnect the cable from the gear selector.

* Press the lock button on the gear shift knob and move the lever to the ‘Park’ position.
*Locate the two 13mm bolts that secure the cable to the gear selector.
* Unscrew the bolts and disconnect the cable.

3. Disconnect the cable from the gearbox.

* Raise the vehicle on a lift or use jacks and stands.
*Locate the two 17mm bolts on the gearbox that secure the cable.
* Unscrew the bolts and disconnect the cable.

4. Remove the old cable.

* Pull the old cable out of the fastenings and move it to the side.

5. Install a new cable.

* Insert the new cable into the fasteners.
* Place a new cable on the gear selector and on the gearbox.
* Tighten the mounting bolts to 20 Nm.

6. Adjust the cable.

* The gear selector must be in the ‘Park’ position.
* The cable must be adjusted so that there is no rubbing when changing gears and the tension is sufficient.
* To adjust, use the mounting lever or manually pull the cable and secure the position with bolts.

7. Connect the battery.

* Connect the negative terminal of the battery.

8. Check the work.

* Start the engine and change gears to check for proper operation.

Adviсe:

* Before installing a new cable, apply lubricant to prevent it from seizing.
*If you have difficulty adjusting the cable, consult an experienced mechanic.
