Towbar electrics for a passenger car
The towbar (tow hitch) is usually equipped with an electrical outlet and appropriate wiring for connection to the vehicle’s electrical system. This is necessary to supply power to the trailer, allowing its lights, turn signals, and brake lights to operate.
Electrical outlet type
There are three main types of electrical outlets for passenger car towbars:
* 7-pin: The most common type of outlet, provides connections for main lights, turn signals, brake lights and fog lights.
* 12-pin: Provides additional functions such as powering the trailer refrigerator, charging the battery, and transmitting a reverse signal.
* 13-pin: The most complete socket type, which includes all the functions of a 12-pin socket, plus the trailer electronic module control line.
Wiring
Towbar wiring typically includes the following wires:
* Ground: Black or brown wire that provides grounding.
*Left Tail Light: Green wire, connects to the left rear light of the car.
* Right Tail Light: Yellow wire, connects to the right rear light of the car.
*Left turn signal: Orange wire, connects to the car’s left turn signal.
*Right turn signal: Red wire, connects to the car’s right turn signal.
*Brake light: Red or green wire, connects to the car’s brake light.
* Fog light: Blue or white wire (only for trailers with fog lights).
* Reverse: Pink wire (only for trailers with reverse function).
*Auxiliary connection (12-pin or 13-pin socket): Yellow or blue wire, used for additional functions such as powering the refrigerator or charging the battery.
Electrical connection
Connecting the towbar electrics usually involves the following steps:
1. Make sure the car engine is turned off and the ignition key is removed.
2. Open your vehicle’s owner’s manual and locate the wiring diagram to determine the correct location of the towbar wiring connectors.
3. Connect the towbar wires to the corresponding connectors on the car, observing the color coding.
4. Secure connections using insulating tape or special connectors.
5. Secure the wiring to prevent it from dangling or touching hot components.
6. Install the electrical outlet on the tow bar.
7. Check the operation of all trailer lights and signals by connecting it to the tow bar.
Important Tips:
* Use wiring and connectors that match the type of electrical outlet.
*Consult a qualified electrician if you are unsure about the correct towbar electrical connections.
* Check and service your tow bar electrical regularly to ensure proper operation.
