Car electrical repair
Tools:
* Voltmeter
* Ohmmeter
* Screwdrivers (flat and Phillips)
* Open-end and spanner wrenches
* Insulation tape
* Grease for electrical contacts
* Spare fuses
* Spare lamps
* Spare wires and terminals
Safety:
* Before performing electrical repairs, disconnect the battery.
* Wear safety glasses and gloves.
* Make sure the work area is well lit and ventilated.
Diagnosis of the problem:
1. Examine the symptoms of the malfunction.
2. Check fuses and replace blown ones.
3. Check the lamps and replace burnt ones.
4. Check the battery and terminals.
5. Check the generator and starter.
6. Check the wiring for fractures, twists and burns.
7. Check electrical connectors and clean if necessary.
Repair:
Replacing fuses:
1. Locate the fuse box.
2. Identify the faulty fuse and replace it with a new one of the same rating.
Replacing lamps:
1. Locate the faulty lamp.
2. Remove the lamp cover and pull out the burnt out lamp.
3. Insert the new lamp and close the cover.
Wiring repair:
1. Repair broken wires using wire nuts or heat shrink tubing.
2. Replace twisted and broken wires with new ones of the same cross-section.
Cleaning the connectors:
1. Remove the connector.
2. Clean the connector contacts with alcohol or contact cleaner.
3. Apply electrical contact grease to the contacts.
Generator and starter repair:
1. Make sure the generator is not jamming or making noise.
2. Check the generator voltage using a voltmeter.
3. If the generator is faulty, have it replaced or repaired by a qualified technician.
4. Check the starter for sticking and noise.
5. If the starter is faulty, have it replaced or repaired by a qualified technician.
Battery connection:
1. Make sure the battery terminals are clean.
2. Connect the positive lead (red) to the positive battery terminal (+).
3. Connect the negative lead (black) to the negative (-) battery terminal.
4. Tighten the terminals with nuts.
