Automatic transmission torque converter clutch chain

Function

The torque converter clutch chain is an important component that provides the mechanical connection between the engine and transmission in automatic transmissions (ATs). It allows you to stepwise connect and disconnect the torque converter from the engine crankshaft.

Design

* The chain is made of durable hardened metal that can withstand high loads and temperatures.
* Chain links are specially designed to engage smoothly with the teeth of the torque converter clutch sprockets.
* The chain passes through an oil passage that provides sufficient transmission fluid to lubricate and cool the chain.

Operating principle

* When the automatic transmission is in low gears or when driving at low speeds, the chain is open (the torque converter clutch ‘slips’). This allows the torque converter to transfer engine torque to the transmission through circulating transmission fluid.
*As the vehicle speed increases, the circuit is gradually closed using hydraulic pressure. This results in a mechanical connection between the torque converter and the crankshaft, which reduces slip and transmits more torque.

* The torque converter clutch circuit plays a critical role in smooth gear shifting and power transfer to the automatic transmission.
* A properly functioning chain ensures optimal acceleration, fuel consumption and transmission longevity.

*Check the chain: It is recommended to periodically check the chain for wear or damage.
* Chain replacement: If severe wear or damage occurs, the chain must be replaced.
