Shift Position Sensor (PSS) Resistors

Location:

*Located on the right side of the transmission, next to the gear selector position sensor.

Function:

*Receives signals from the gearshift position sensor and converts them into voltage, which is sent to the transmission control module (TCM).
* The TCM uses this voltage to determine the selected gear selector position.

Specifications:

* Subaru Forester SF5 uses two PSS resistors:
* Park/Neutral Position Resistor (P/N)
*Reverse position resistor (R)

Typical symptoms of a malfunction:

* Incorrect TCM gear selector position detection.
* The “Check Transmission” or “Overheat” indicator lights come on.
* Problems with gear shifting.

Replacement:

* PSS resistors are usually replaced in pairs.
*Replacement requires the following steps:
1. Remove the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Raise the vehicle and support it on stands.
3. Remove the cover around the gear selector position sensor.
4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the gear selector position sensor.
5. Unscrew the bolts securing the gear selector position sensor.
6. Remove the gear selector position sensor along with the PSS resistors.
7. Install new PSS resistors and reassemble everything in reverse order.
8. Reset fault codes.

Note:

*Replacement of PSS resistors may require the use of a special scanner and software.
* It is recommended that you take it to a qualified mechanic for replacement.
