Location of automatic transmission position sensor in Hyundai Accent
The automatic transmission position sensor (PRNDL) is located on the transmission housing. The exact location may vary depending on the year and model of your vehicle. In most cases, the sensor is located:
For Hyundai Accent 1999-2005.
*At the rear of the transmission housing, next to the right drive shaft
For Hyundai Accent 2006-2011
* On the left side of the transmission housing, under the automatic transmission housing filter
Sensor identification
The automatic transmission position sensor usually has a small rectangular or square housing made of plastic or metal. It is connected to a multi-pin connector and a lever that is connected to the gear selector.
Sensor function
The automatic transmission position sensor reads the position of the gear selector and transmits this information to the transmission electronic control unit (ECU). The ECU uses this information to control torque converter lock-up, gear shifting, and other transmission functions.
Signs of a faulty automatic transmission position sensor
A faulty automatic transmission position sensor can cause the following problems:
* Incorrect indication of the selected transmission mode on the dashboard
* Problems with gear shifting
* Jerking or slipping of the transmission
*Check Engine light comes on
Replacing the automatic transmission position sensor
The automatic transmission position sensor should be replaced by a qualified mechanic. The replacement procedure usually includes:
1. Removing the air filter or air filter housing.
2. Disconnecting the automatic transmission position sensor connector.
3. Unscrewing the bolts or nuts securing the sensor to the transmission housing.
4. Installing a new sensor and tightening fasteners.
5. Connecting the connector to the sensor.
6. Installing the air filter or air filter housing.
After replacing the sensor, you may need to clear trouble codes using a diagnostic scan tool.
