Causes and elimination of kicks in the automatic transmission:
1. Low transmission fluid (ATF) level
* Check ATF level.
* If necessary, add fluid recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
2. Contaminated transmission fluid
* Replace ATF and filter according to manufacturer’s recommendations.
3. Faulty transmission solenoid
* Solenoids control the flow of fluid in the transmission.
*Use an OBD-II scanner to diagnose trouble codes related to solenoids.
* If necessary, replace the faulty solenoid.
4. Worn friction discs
* This may cause slipping and kicking.
* In this case, a major overhaul of the gearbox is required.
5. Problems with the electronic control unit (ECU)
* The ECU controls the operation of the gearbox.
*Use an OBD-II scanner to diagnose ECU related trouble codes.
* If necessary, repair or replace the ECU.
6. Blockage in the hydraulic plate
* A clogged hydraulic plate can result in insufficient fluid pressure.
* Clean the hydraulic plate and replace the filter.
7. Faulty torque converter
* The torque converter transfers power from the engine to the transmission.
* Check the torque converter for leaks or noise.
* Replace the torque converter if necessary.
8. Mechanical failure
* Kicks can be caused by worn gears, bearings or shafts.
*Transmission overhaul or replacement required.
Additional tips:
* Perform gearbox maintenance in a timely manner.
* Avoid sudden acceleration and braking.
*Use manufacturer’s recommended ATF.
* Monitor ATF level and transmission condition.
