Automatic transmission cooling system with radiator
Automatic transmissions generate a significant amount of heat during operation. To prevent overheating and ensure optimal performance, automatic transmissions are equipped with a cooling system that includes a radiator.
Automatic transmission radiator:
* Placed in the front of the car next to the engine radiator.
* It is a tubular-plate heat exchanger that transfers heat from the hot automatic transmission fluid to a colder stream of cool air.
* Consists of aluminum tubes and plates through which automatic transmission fluid circulates.
* Inner tubes have a finned surface to increase heat transfer area.
* An electrically driven fan or a pulley driven by the engine provides forced air flow through the radiator.
Working principle:
* Hot automatic transmission fluid is pumped through the radiator.
* As fluid passes through the radiator tubes, it transfers heat to the plates, which in turn heat the cool air passing through the radiator.
* The cooled fluid is returned to the automatic transmission.
* The fan helps dissipate the heat removed from the automatic transmission fluid.
Advantage of a cooling system with a radiator:
* Effective heat dissipation to prevent overheating of the automatic transmission.
* Increased durability and performance of automatic transmission.
* Improved fuel efficiency due to reduced friction losses in automatic transmissions.
Service:
* Check the automatic transmission fluid level regularly.
* Replace automatic transmission fluid and filter in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
* Flush the automatic transmission radiator to remove accumulated deposits.
* If necessary, replace the automatic transmission radiator.
Maintaining a properly functioning transmission cooling system is critical to reliable transmission performance and longevity.
