The Nissan Almera N16 automatic transmission is equipped with a closed cooling system that uses automatic transmission fluid (ATF) as a coolant. The cooling system includes the following components:

Transmission cooler

The transmission cooler is an oil heat exchanger installed in the engine radiator. It transfers heat from the ATF to the engine coolant, which is then dissipated to the atmosphere through the radiator.

Transmission control unit (TCU)

The TCU controls the operation of the automatic transmission cooling system. It uses temperature sensors to sense the ATF temperature and regulate the flow of coolant through the cooler.

Cooling lines

The cooling system uses steel or aluminum lines to circulate ATF between the automatic transmission and the cooler. These lines have flexible hoses for connection to the gearbox.

Working principle

1. When the automatic transmission is running, the ATF heats up due to friction and tension.
2. Heated ATF flows through steel lines to the heat exchanger.
3. In the heat exchanger, ATF transfers heat to the engine coolant.
4. Cooled ATF returns to the automatic transmission through aluminum lines.
5. The TCU monitors the ATF temperature using sensors and regulates the flow of coolant through the cooler to maintain the optimum temperature.

Cooling System Maintenance

* ATF Replacement: ATF should be replaced according to the maintenance schedule specified in the vehicle’s owner’s manual.
* Replacing the automatic transmission filter: The automatic transmission filter should be replaced at the same time as replacing the ATF.
* Check Cooling Lines: Cooling lines should be checked for leaks or damage and replaced if necessary.
* Check and replace the heat exchanger: The heat exchanger should be checked and cleaned or replaced if clogged or damaged.
* TCU Diagnosis: The TCU should be diagnosed for trouble codes and replaced if necessary.
