Cooling the Opel Insignia automatic transmission
The Opel Insignia model is equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission 6T40 or an 8-speed automatic transmission 8L45. Both transmissions have cooling systems that ensure optimum operating temperatures are maintained.
6T40 Transmission Cooling
The 6T40 transmission is cooled in two ways:
* External heat exchanger: Located next to the engine radiator. The transfer fluid passes through a heat exchanger where it is cooled by air passing through the radiator.
* Internal heat exchanger: Built into the gearbox housing. It cools the transmission fluid by drawing heat away from the components inside the transmission.
8L45 Transmission Cooling
The 8L45 transmission has a more efficient cooling system, including the following components:
* External Heat Exchanger: Like the 6T40 transmission, the 8L45 has an external heat exchanger located near the engine radiator.
*Internal Heat Exchanger: Like the 6T40 transmission, the 8L45 has an internal heat exchanger built into the transmission housing.
* Electric Oil Pump: The 8L45 transmission is equipped with an electric oil pump that circulates transmission fluid through the cooling system even when the engine is not running.
Transmission Cooling System Maintenance
To ensure optimal transmission cooling, it is important to perform the following maintenance activities regularly:
* Replacement of transmission fluid: According to the manufacturer’s regulations.
* Cleaning Heat Exchangers: Removing contaminants and debris that may block heat transfer.
* Electrical Oil Pump Check: Make sure the pump is operating properly, especially on 8L45 transmissions.
Proper care of your transmission cooling system will extend its life and help prevent costly repairs in the future.
