Adjusting automatic transmission control cables

Required tools:

* Pliers
*Adjustable or socket wrench

Safety:

* Disconnect the battery before starting work.
* Allow the engine to cool before making adjustments.
* Wear protective gloves and goggles when working with cables.

Instructions:

1. Determine the location of the cables

Automatic transmission control cables are usually located on or near the transmission.

2. Disconnect cable ends

*Using pliers, squeeze the cable end retainer and pull it to release it from the arm.
* Repeat for all other cables.

3. Loosen the adjusting nuts

*Using an adjustable wrench or socket wrench, loosen the locknuts on both ends of the cables.

4. Move the gear shift lever to Park (P) position.

5. Adjust the length of the cables

* Extend the cables by turning their adjusting bolts clockwise.
* Shorten the cables by turning the adjusting bolts counterclockwise.
*The goal is to have a slight tension on the cables in the parked position, but not so much that it makes it difficult to move the lever.

6. Check lever travel

* Check if the lever moves smoothly between all positions. If further adjustment is required, repeat steps 3 through 5.

7. Tighten the adjusting nuts

* Using an adjustable wrench or socket wrench, tighten the adjusting nuts. Don’t overtighten.

8. Connect the cable ends

* Insert the cable ends back into the arms and secure them with the clamps.

9. Connect the battery

* Connect the battery and start the engine.

10. Checking the work

* Check the operation of the automatic transmission by shifting between all gears. Ensure smooth shifting and no unwanted noise.

Adviсe:

* If the cables are well adjusted, the lever should move easily between all positions without binding or slipping.
* If you have difficulty adjusting the cables or notice any malfunctions in the automatic transmission, contact a qualified mechanic.
* Check and adjust automatic transmission control cables regularly to ensure optimal operation.
