Adjusting automatic transmission clutch clearances

Clutch clearances in an automatic transmission (AT) affect the smoothness of gear shifting and clutch service life. Here’s how to adjust clutch clearances in automatic transmissions:

Required tools and materials:

* Tool set for automatic transmission
* Measuring probe for clutch clearances
* Transmission fluid
* Gaskets and seals

Security measures:

* Operate on a cold automatic transmission.
* Wear gloves and safety glasses.
* Observe safety regulations when working with transmission fluid.

Adjustment procedure:

1. Remove the automatic transmission: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for removing the automatic transmission from the vehicle.

2. Expand the clutch pack: Use the special tool to expand the clutch pack.

3. Insert the dipstick: Insert the dipstick into the gap between the clutches.

4. Measure the gap: Carefully insert the feeler gauge all the way and record the readings. The clearance must comply with the manufacturer’s specifications.

5. Adjust the clearance (if necessary): If the clearance is not within specifications, adjust it by tightening or loosening the clutch pack bolts. Repeat the measuring and adjustment process until the correct clearance is achieved.

6. Align the clutch packs: Carefully slide the clutch packs towards each other.

7. Install gaskets and seals: Install new gaskets and seals on the clutch pack.

8. Install the automatic transmission: Install the automatic transmission on the vehicle following the manufacturer’s instructions.

9. Fill with transmission fluid: Fill the automatic transmission with transmission fluid in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications.

10. Check the fluid level: Check the transmission fluid level after starting the engine and warming up the automatic transmission to operating temperature.

Adviсe:

*Use the appropriate size dipstick for your automatic transmission type.
* Do not overtighten the clutch pack bolts as this may damage them.
*If you are unsure of your ability to adjust clutch clearances, consult a qualified mechanic.
