Adjusting the automatic transmission control cables
Required tools:
* Wrench set
* Flat head screwdriver
* Measuring tape or ruler
Precautions:
* Be sure to perform the procedure on a cold engine.
* Do not overtighten the cables as this may damage them.
Instructions:
1. Determine the gearbox type:
* Floor-mounted: The gear shift lever is located on the floor.
* Selector: The gear shift lever is located on the center console.
2. Find the adjustment bolts:
*They are usually located on the transmission or under the hood near the gear lever.
*Bolts may be marked “T” or “R” to indicate shift and reverse cables.
3. Loosen the cables:
* Use a wrench or screwdriver to loosen the cable bolts.
* Do not remove the bolts completely, just loosen them enough to allow the cables to be adjusted.
4. Adjust the position of the gear shift lever:
* Floor lever:
* Move the lever to the park position (P).
* Hold the lever in this position and tighten the shift cable bolts (T).
* Move the lever to reverse (R) and tighten the reverse cable bolts (R).
* Selector lever:
* Move the lever to Park (P) or Neutral (N) position.
* Loosen the cable mounting bolts.
* Set the lever to the park position (P) and tighten the parking cable bolts.
* Move the lever to the neutral (N) position and tighten the neutral cable bolts.
5. Check the cable movement:
* Move the gear shift lever through all positions.
* Make sure that the cables move smoothly, without jamming or sagging.
* If necessary, adjust the length of the cables by loosening or tightening the adjusting bolts.
6. Tighten the mounting bolts:
* Once the cable travel is adjusted, tighten the cable bolts.
* Make sure they are tightened to the same torque.
7. Check operation:
* Start the engine and move the gearshift lever through all positions.
* Make sure the transmission shifts smoothly and without slipping.
Note:
*If shifting problems persist after adjusting the cables, the transmission may require more serious repairs. Contact a qualified mechanic for diagnosis and repair.
