Method 1: Read your vehicle’s owner’s manual
*Many instruction manuals indicate the number of gearbox stages.
Method 2: Online Resources
* There are websites such as AutoData and Car and Driver where you can find information about your car, including the number of automatic transmission speeds.
*Enter the year, make and model of your vehicle to get detailed information.
Method 3: Checking the car
* Set the gear selector to “L” or “1” mode.
* Accelerate to the limit and watch the tachometer readings.
* If the tachometer stops dropping sharply when the limit is reached, then most likely your automatic transmission has more than one gear.
Method 4: Find the identification plate
*Locate the identification plate, usually located on the driver’s door or under the hood.
*Check the transmission code, which usually consists of a letter and a number. The first digit indicates the number of automatic transmission stages.
Note:
*For some modern vehicles, the number of automatic transmission stages may be greater than the number of visible physical gears on the gear selector. This involves the use of “virtual transmissions” to improve efficiency.
* If you have difficulty determining the number of automatic transmission stages, contact your mechanic or dealer.
