Adjusting the automatic transmission kickdown cable

Tools:

* Open-end or socket wrench
* Measuring tape or ruler
*Socket wrench or wrench (optional)

Procedure:

1. Locate the kickdown cable: This is usually located near the throttle body or on the carburetor. It will have a plastic end that attaches to the throttle lever.

2. Raise the vehicle: Raise the front of the vehicle with a jack and support it with jack stands for safety.

3. Remove the air filter cover (if equipped): This will give you access to the throttle lever.

4. Lightly press the gas pedal: The throttle lever should move slightly.

5. Check the clearance: When the gas pedal is pressed, there should be a small gap between the tip of the kickdown cable and the throttle lever. Typically a gap of 1-2 mm is required.

6. Adjust the gap: If the gap is not within specifications, do the following:

*Some cables have adjusting nuts. Loosen the nut and pull the cable to reduce the gap, or loosen it to increase the gap.
*Other cables have a bracket that connects the cable to the throttle lever. Detach the bracket, adjust the position, and reattach it.

7. Tighten the nut: Tighten the adjusting nut or bracket to lock the adjusted length.

8. Recheck: Press the gas pedal again to check the clearance. Make additional adjustments if necessary.

9. Reinstall the air filter cover (if removed): Secure the cover in place.

10. Check operation: Start the engine and shift into gear. Accelerate to check if the kickdown cable is adjusted correctly. Downshifting should occur smoothly and without slipping.
