Adjusting the automatic transmission cable on a Mercedes-Benz W124

Tools:

* Phillips screwdriver
* Throttle cable
* Ruler or tape measure

Operating procedure:

1. Neutral position check

* Stop the engine and place the gear shift lever in neutral.
* Raise the vehicle on a lift or supports.
* Disconnect the throttle cable from the throttle valve.

2. Setting the automatic transmission control lever

* Locate the automatic transmission control lever on the gearbox.
* Using a Phillips screwdriver, loosen the nut that holds the lever in place.
* Move the lever so that it is exactly in the center of the axis.
* Tighten the nut.

3. Adjusting the automatic transmission cable

* Pull out the end of the automatic transmission cable using pliers.
* Attach the cable to the automatic transmission control lever.
* Insert the cable into the adjuster on the transmission housing.
* Tighten the adjustment bolt to a torque of 10 Nm.

4. Throttle cable adjustment

* Attach the throttle cable to the throttle body.
* Loosen the cable lock nut.
*Adjust the cable length until a free play of 3-4mm is achieved when moving the throttle lever.
* Tighten the locknut.

5. Check and adjustment

* Start the engine and warm it up to operating temperature.
* Change gears, making sure that each gear engages smoothly and without jerking.
* If necessary, readjust the cables to achieve optimal performance.

Adviсe:

*Use a ruler or tape measure to measure the free play in the throttle cable.
* After adjustment, check the transmission fluid level.
* Inspect and adjust automatic transmission cables regularly to maintain optimal transmission performance.
