Adjusting the automatic transmission torque converter

The torque converter is an important component of an automatic transmission (AT). It is designed to smoothly transfer power from the engine to the gearbox and provide the following functions:

* Torque multiplication at low speeds
* Ensuring smooth transition between gears
* Absorption of engine vibrations

To ensure proper operation of the torque converter, it must be adjusted. The adjustment usually involves adjusting the lockup pressure, which determines when the lockup clutch engages and reduces power loss.

Procedure for adjusting the automatic transmission torque converter:

Materials and equipment:

* Automatic transmission scanner
* Tool kit for automatic transmission repair
* Transmission fluid

Steps:

1. Malfunction diagnosis: Use an automatic transmission scanner to read fault codes and check the operating parameters of the torque converter. Determine the cause of the problem, such as low lock-up pressure or slippage.

2. Drain transmission fluid: Drain transmission fluid into a clean drain pan.

3. Removing the torque converter: Remove the torque converter from the transmission following the manufacturer’s instructions.

4. Inspect and replace torque converter components: Check the torque converter for wear or damage. Replace any faulty components, such as lock-up clutches or seals.

5. Lockout Pressure Adjustment: Use the adjustment screw or electronic regulator to adjust the lockout pressure to manufacturer specifications.

6. Installing the torque converter: Install the torque converter back into the transmission.

7. Refilling Transmission Fluid: Fill the transmission with new transmission fluid according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

8. Testing and Adjustment: Carry out a test drive to check the operation of the torque converter. Adjust blocking pressure or other settings as necessary.

Precautions:

*Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
* Use the correct tools and equipment.
* Be careful when draining and filling transmission fluid.
*Do not over-tighten fasteners.

Adjusting the automatic transmission torque converter requires technical knowledge and special equipment. If you do not have experience in automatic transmission repair, it is recommended to contact a car service center.
