Location of the automatic transmission oil temperature sensor on a Volkswagen Touareg:

For Touareg models with 8-speed automatic transmission Aisin (TF-80/81SC):

* On the automatic transmission oil pan, on the left side (driver’s side)

For Touareg models with 6-speed automatic transmission ZF (6HP26A/28A):

Sensor appearance:

* This is usually a small cylindrical sensor with an electrical connector on one side.
*Can be painted black, silver or other color.
* Has a thread for mounting in the automatic transmission housing.

Sensor function:

* Measures automatic transmission oil temperature.
* Transmits measured temperature data to the automatic transmission electronic control unit (TCU).
* The TCU uses this information to adjust gear shifting, torque converter lock-up and other functions.

Possible faults:

* A faulty sensor may give incorrect automatic transmission oil temperature readings.
* This may lead to overheating of the automatic transmission or other problems.
*Symptoms of a faulty sensor may include delays in shifting, slipping or jerking during shifts, and a warning light on the dashboard.

Sensor replacement:

* Replacing the automatic transmission oil temperature sensor requires special tools and knowledge.
* It is recommended that this task be left to a qualified mechanic.
* Before replacing the sensor, it is also necessary to drain the automatic transmission oil and replace the oil filter.
