Procedure for replacing the automatic transmission pan gasket on a Toyota RAV4
Required tools and materials:
* New automatic transmission pan gasket
* Automatic transmission filter (recommended to be replaced at the same time)
* Automatic transmission oil (volume depends on the model and year of manufacture of the car)
* Set of wrenches and screwdrivers
* Pliers
* Oil drain container
Steps:
1. Prepare the vehicle: Place the vehicle on a level surface, set the parking brake and allow the engine to cool.
2. Remove the crankcase protection: If there is a crankcase protection, remove it by unscrewing the mounting bolts.
3. Drain the oil: Place a container for draining the oil under the automatic transmission pan. Unscrew the drain plug and drain the oil. Let the oil drain completely.
4. Unscrew the automatic transmission pan: Unscrew the bolts securing the automatic transmission pan. Tap the pan with a light hammer to separate it from the transmission housing.
5. Remove the old gasket: Carefully remove the old gasket from the pan and transmission housing. Clean the surfaces of gasket and sealant residues.
6. Install a new gasket: Install a new gasket on the automatic transmission pan. Make sure it is positioned correctly and fits snugly.
7. Install the automatic transmission pan: Lift the automatic transmission pan and install it in place. Tighten the mounting bolts evenly and diagonally. Do not overtighten the bolts.
8. Install the automatic transmission filter: Remove the old automatic transmission filter and install a new one. Tighten the filter bolt.
9. Fill with oil: Fill the automatic transmission with new oil through the dipstick hole. Check the oil level following the instructions in the owner’s manual.
10. Start the engine: Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes. Check for oil leaks from under the automatic transmission pan.
11. Check the oil level: After driving a short distance, check the automatic transmission oil level again and top up if necessary.
Recommendations:
* It is recommended to change the automatic transmission pan gasket every 60-90 thousand km.
* Use automatic transmission oil recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
* Check the automatic transmission oil level the day after replacing the gasket to make sure there are no leaks in the system.
