Checking the oil level in the BMW E39 automatic transmission:

Materials:

* Rag

Process:

1. Place the car on a level surface and wait until the engine cools down.
2. Open the hood.
3. Find the dipstick for the automatic transmission. It is usually located near the engine, towards the front of the car. The dipstick usually has a yellow or orange handle.
4. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it with a cloth.
5. Insert the dipstick back all the way and immediately pull it out again.
6. Check the oil level on the dipstick:
* Normal level: The oil should be between the MIN and MAX marks on the dipstick.
*Low level: oil is below the MIN mark, oil needs to be added.
*High level: oil is above the MAX mark, excess must be drained.

2. Place a container under the drain plug to drain the oil.
3. Unscrew the drain plug and drain excess oil.
4. Replace the drain plug.
