Step-by-step guide to checking the automatic transmission solenoid using a tester

Required tools:

* Multimeter
* Insulated probe tips
* Automatic transmission wiring diagram

Steps:

1. Safety first:

* Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to prevent electric shock.
* Let the vehicle cool down to avoid burns.
*Work in a well-ventilated area.

2. Determining the purpose of the solenoid terminals:

*Find an automatic transmission wiring diagram in your vehicle’s service manual or online.
*Locate the solenoid you want to test.
* Find out the purpose of each pin from the diagram.

3. Connecting a multimeter:

* Set the multimeter to resistance (ohms) measurement mode.
* Connect the red probe to the positive (+) terminal of the solenoid.
* Connect the black probe to the negative (-) terminal of the solenoid.

4. Resistance measurement:

* The multimeter should display the resistance value.
* Compare the measured value with the specifications listed in the service manual.

5. Interpretation of results:

* Normal value: Resistance is within specifications, indicating that the solenoid is operating properly.
*High Resistance: Exceeds specifications and may indicate a broken winding or poor connection.
*Low Resistance: Below specifications, may indicate a short circuit in the winding.

6. Reconnection:

* Reconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
*Remove the insulated tips from the multimeter probes.

7. Recheck:

* Start the engine and shift the transmission to all positions.
* Check for leaks or other problems.

Note:

* If diagnostics indicate that the solenoid is faulty, it must be replaced by a qualified mechanic.
* Do not attempt to repair the solenoid yourself as this may cause serious damage to the automatic transmission.
