Automatic transmission torque converter bearings

The torque converter of an automatic transmission (automatic gearbox) is a hydrodynamic torque transformer that transfers power from the engine to the gearbox. It consists of three main elements: a pump, a turbine and a reactor. Bearings play an important role in ensuring smooth operation of the torque converter and reducing wear on its components.

Types of bearings in an automatic transmission torque converter

The following types of bearings are commonly used in a torque converter:

* Pump Bearings: Typically these are radial needle bearings that support the pump shaft.
* Turbine Bearings: Radial needle bearings are also commonly used. They support the turbine shaft and ensure its rotation around its axis.
* Reactor Bearings: Reactor bearings are typically single row ball bearings. They support the reactor shaft, which directs the fluid flow between the pump and the turbine.

* Stainless Steel: Stainless steel bearings resist corrosion but are more expensive than steel bearings.
* Bronze: Bronze bearings have good anti-friction properties and can withstand high loads.
* Polymer Composite: Polymer composite bearings are lightweight and wear resistant, but may be limited in heat resistance.

Bearing lubrication

Torque converter bearings must be properly lubricated to ensure longevity and prevent wear. Lubrication is usually provided by automatic transmission fluid, which circulates through the torque converter.

Signs of worn torque converter bearings

Some signs that indicate worn torque converter bearings include:

* Noise or vibration during transmission, especially in low gears.
* Gear slipping or loss of power.
* Transmission fluid leaking from the torque converter.

Maintenance and replacement of torque converter bearings

The torque converter bearings should be serviced or replaced by a qualified mechanic. This procedure requires special equipment and knowledge, as well as transmission removal.

Timely replacement of worn torque converter bearings is critical to the smooth operation of the automatic transmission and avoiding costly repairs or replacements.
