Automatic transmission gear shift paddle
The steering wheel shift paddle, also known as paddle shifters, is a mechanism located behind the steering wheel that is used to control gears in cars with an automatic transmission.
Design:
* Two levers located on the left and right side of the steering wheel.
* The lever labeled “+” or “Upshift” is used to shift to a higher gear.
* The lever marked “-” or “Downshift” is used to shift to a lower gear.
Job:
When the driver presses one of the levers, the electronic transmission control module (TCM) receives a shift signal. The TCM then activates the appropriate solenoid in the transmission, which changes gear.
Advantages:
*Quick Shifting: Steering wheel mounted paddle shifters allow the driver to change gears faster and easier than using a stick shift.
* Increased Control: The driver has more control over gear selection, which is especially useful during sporty driving or in conditions that require quick gear changes.
* Improved throttle response: Steering wheel mounted paddle shifters allow the driver to maintain optimal engine speed, providing better throttle response.
*Aesthetic Look: Paddle shifters add a sporty look and feel to the car’s interior.
Flaws:
*Takes some getting used to: Drivers may need some time to get used to using the paddle shifters.
* May be distracting: Some drivers may be distracted by the steering wheel shift paddles, especially in heavy driving conditions.
*Not available on some models: Steering wheel mounted paddle shifters are not available on all vehicle models or trim levels.
