Diagnostics of VAZ car electrics

Diagnostics of the electrics of a VAZ car requires a consistent approach and the use of appropriate tools and equipment. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

1. Visual inspection

* Check the battery for leaks, corrosion and damaged terminals.
* Inspect the wiring for damage, loose connections and exposed wires.
* Check fuses and relays for blown or faulty components.

2. Battery testing

*Use a multimeter to check the battery voltage (should be around 12.6V).
* Perform a load test to check the battery’s ability to supply enough current to start the engine.

3. Starter testing

* Make sure the ignition is turned off.
* Connect a multimeter in parallel to the starter terminals.
* Turn the key to the “Start” position.
*Check to see if the voltage drops below 10V. If it drops, it may indicate a faulty starter.

4. Generator testing

* Start the engine and let it idle.
* Use a multimeter to check the voltage at the battery terminals.
* Should be around 14.4V (the alternator is charging the battery).
*If the voltage is lower, it may indicate a problem with the alternator.

5. Checking the ignition system

* Check the spark plugs for wear or damage.
* Check the ignition wires for damage or cracks.
* Test the ignition coil using a coil tester or multimeter.

6. Checking headlights and signals

* Turn on the headlights and check their operation.
* Check turn signals, brake lights and reverse lights.
*If any of them do not work, check the lamps, fuses and wires.

7. Diagnostics using a fault code scanner (OBD-II)

* Connect the OBD-II scanner to the vehicle’s diagnostic connector.
* Read and interpret trouble codes that may indicate electrical problems.

Diagnostic tools and equipment:

* Multimeter
* Battery Load Tester
* Ignition coil tester
* OBD-II scanner
* Tool set

Adviсe:

* Be careful when working with vehicle electrical equipment.
* Before performing any diagnostics, de-energize the vehicle by removing the negative terminal of the battery.
*Refer to your specific vehicle’s repair manual for specific information and instructions.
* Do not attempt to repair serious electrical problems yourself. Contact a qualified auto mechanic for assistance.
