How to properly change the oil in an automatic transmission

Materials:

* New transmission oil (check the label recommended for your specific vehicle model)
* New oil filter (if applicable)
* Transmission pan gasket
* Rags or paper towels
* Funnel

Tools:

* Ratchet wrench or wrench
* Oil drain pan
* Gloves

Instructions:

1. Prepare the car:

* Warm up the engine and transmission by driving for a few miles.
* Place the vehicle on a level surface and apply the parking brake.

2. Open the drain plug:

* Place an oil drain pan under the transmission.
*Locate the drain plug and use a wrench to unscrew it.
* Wait until the old oil drains into the pan.

3. Remove the oil pan:

* After the old oil has been drained, unscrew the bolts around the perimeter of the oil pan.
* Carefully remove the oil pan. It may be stuck in place with a gasket, so use a flathead screwdriver to pry it loose.

4. Replace oil filter (if applicable):

*If your transmission has an oil filter, unscrew it and replace it with a new one.
* Lubricate the new filter with a small amount of new oil.

5. Install the oil pan:

* Apply a thin layer of sealant to the new oil pan gasket.
* Install the gasket onto the pan and secure it with bolts. Tighten the bolts to the recommended torque.

6. Fill with new oil:

* Using a funnel, pour new oil into the gearbox.
*Oil quantity varies depending on the vehicle, so check your owner’s manual.

7. Check the oil level:

* Start the engine and let the transmission idle for about five minutes.
* Turn off the engine and check the oil level using the dipstick.
* The oil level should be between the MIN and MAX marks on the dipstick.
* If necessary, add oil to the required level.

8. Close the drain plug:

* Tighten the drain plug with a wrench.

9. Reset the oil change counter:

*Some vehicles have an oil change counter that must be reset after an oil change. Find the relevant information in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.

Notes:

* Do not overfill the gearbox with oil.
*Use the correct type of oil recommended for your transmission.
* Check the gearbox oil level regularly and top up if necessary.
*If you are unsure of your skills, have your transmission oil changed by a qualified mechanic.
