On vehicles with an automatic transmission, the handbrake (parking brake) is intended only to hold the vehicle in place while parked. It is not used while driving.

Correct use of the handbrake on a car with an automatic transmission:

1. Park the vehicle: Place the vehicle on a level surface and place the transmission in park (P).
2. Press the brake pedal: Press the brake pedal with your foot to bring the vehicle to a complete stop.
3. Raise the handbrake: Using the handbrake lever, lift it up until it stops. You should hear a click when it clicks into place.
4. Release the brake pedal: Slowly release the brake pedal so that the load on the wheels is transferred to the handbrake.

Disabling the handbrake:

1. Press the brake pedal: Press the brake pedal with your foot to hold the vehicle in place.
2. Lower the handbrake: Press the button or switch on the handbrake lever and lower it down.

Important Notes:

* Never leave your car in a parking lot without using the handbrake.
* Do not use the handbrake as a means of slowing down while driving.
* Do not tow the vehicle with the handbrake applied as this may damage the transmission.
* If you feel any resistance when engaging or disengaging the handbrake, have it checked and repaired by a mechanic.
