What to do if the automatic transmission (automatic gearbox) is slipping:
1. Stay calm and don’t panic. Automatic transmission slipping can be scary, but it’s important to stay calm and act smart.
2. Stop the car in a safe place. Pull to the side of the road or find an empty stretch of road where you can safely pull over. Move the gear shift lever to the “P” (park) position.
3. Turn off the engine. This will stop all moving parts in the transmission and potentially reduce damage.
4. Check the transmission fluid level. Remove the dipstick to check the fluid level and ensure that the level is within the specified range. If there is not enough liquid, add it.
5. Inspect the transmission. Look for signs of leaking, cracking or damage. This can help determine the possible cause of the slipping.
6. Try restarting the engine. Sometimes simply restarting the engine can fix the problem. Move the gearshift lever to “D” (drive) and gently press the gas pedal.
7. Check the gear selector. Make sure the gear selector is correctly positioned in the correct position. Sometimes the selector may not shift completely, resulting in slipping.
8. If all else fails, call a tow truck. If you cannot fix the problem yourself, call a towing service and take your vehicle to a repair shop as soon as possible.
Precautions:
* Do not continue to drive the vehicle if it is slipping. This may make the damage worse.
*Do not tow the vehicle yourself. The automatic transmission must be towed with the wheels raised off the ground.
* Do not attempt to repair an automatic transmission yourself if you do not have the proper experience. This can be dangerous and costly.
