Steps to replace the automatic transmission unit on a Volkswagen Passat B5:
Materials:
* New automatic transmission unit
*Transmission Tool Set
* Lift or jacks
* Container for draining transmission oil
* New transmission pan gasket
Instructions:
1. Prepare the car:
* Place the car on a lift or raise it using jacks, ensuring reliable support.
* Secure the vehicle and place it in Park (P) position.
* Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Remove the drive shafts:
* Disconnect the ball joints from the wheel hubs.
* Remove the bolts securing the drive shafts to the transmission.
* Pull the drive shafts out of the gearbox.
3. Drain the transmission oil:
* Place a container under the transmission pan.
* Loosen the pan drain plug and drain the transmission oil.
4. Remove the transmission pan:
* Remove the bolts securing the transmission pan.
* Carefully remove the pan and remove the gasket.
5. Remove the old automatic transmission unit:
* Remove the starter.
* Disconnect the vacuum hoses and electrical connectors from the transmission.
* Remove the bolts holding the transmission to the engine.
* Using a jack, carefully lower the transmission.
6. Install a new automatic transmission unit:
* Lift the new automatic transmission unit into place.
* Install the bolts securing the transmission to the engine.
* Connect the vacuum hoses and electrical connectors.
7. Install the transmission pan:
* Place a new gasket on the transmission pan.
* Install the pan onto the transmission and tighten the bolts.
8. Install drive shafts:
*Insert the drive shafts into the gearbox.
* Install the bolts securing the drive shafts to the transmission.
* Connect the ball joints to the wheel hubs.
9. Add transmission oil:
* Add transmission oil through the dipstick hole to the required level.
10. Reset automatic transmission adaptations (optional):
*Connect the OBD2 scanner to the car.
* Select the transmission control module.
* Find the function of reset adaptations or retraining.
*Follow the instructions on the scanner screen.
11. Start the engine and check:
* Start the engine and let it idle.
* Shift the gear selector to all positions and check whether the gears shift smoothly.
