The automatic transmission ECU (electronic transmission control unit) on the Volkswagen Golf 4 is located under the hood of the car:
1. Open the hood.
2. Locate the battery located on the left side of the engine compartment.
3. Behind the battery is the fuse box.
4. Under the fuse block is the automatic transmission ECU. This is a black block with connectors.
