Operation of Kia automatic transmission

Service

* Check the transmission fluid level regularly. The liquid should be clear and red. If the fluid is dark or smells burnt, it needs to be replaced.
* Change the transmission fluid and filter every 50,000-60,000 km. This will help prevent wear and prolong the life of the transmission.
* Check engine and transmission mounts regularly and replace if necessary. Damaged mountings can cause vibrations and additional stress on the transmission.
* Check the bolt connections and fastenings of the transmission. Loose bolts can cause fluid leaks and cause transmission failure.

Driving

*Always come to a complete stop before changing gears. Changing gears while moving can damage the transmission.
* Do not abuse the “kickdown” mode. Use “kickdown” only for overtaking or emergency acceleration.
* Avoid slipping and sudden acceleration. Slipping and sudden acceleration can cause excessive wear on the clutch and transmission.
* Use “L” mode for going downhill. “L” mode limits gearing, preventing the transmission from overheating.
* Park on a level surface and apply the handbrake. This will prevent stress on the transmission when parking.

Preventive measures

* Warm up your vehicle before driving, especially in cold weather. This will allow the transmission fluid to warm up and circulate more easily.
* Avoid sudden acceleration and deceleration. This can lead to increased wear on the clutch and gearbox.
* Carry a supply of transmission fluid with you in case of leaks.
* Watch for any signs of transmission trouble, such as slipping, vibration or noise. If you notice any problems, contact a certified mechanic as soon as possible.

Additional Tips

*Follow manufacturer’s recommendations for maintenance.
*Use only factory approved transmission fluid.
* Clean the radiator regularly. A clogged radiator can cause the transmission to overheat.
* Do not tow a vehicle with a faulty transmission. This may cause further damage.

Proper operation and maintenance will help extend the life of your Kia car’s automatic transmission.
